Chabot College 2024-2026 237 CREDIT COURSE LISTING, ES SOCIAL JUSTICE: ETHNIC STUDIES Associate in Arts for Transfer The Associate in Arts for Transfer in Social Justice: Ethnic Studies degree is designed to prepare students who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in the field of Ethnic Studies at the CSUs. Some related majors include: African American Studies, Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicana/Chicano Studies, Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, Latin American Studies, Mexican American Studies, and Native American Studies. Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary and unique scholarly field that centralizes and redefines the experiences of people of color in the United States, using an intersectional analysis. Born out of the people power movements of various communities of color in the 1960s and the efforts of the third world Liberation Front, Ethnic Studies emphasizes on the praxis of resistance and liberation in order to eliminate all forms of injustice and oppression, especially along race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality. Courses provide a critical racial perspective with a focus on the history, literature, and cultures of African Americans, Arab Americans, Asian Americans, Chicanx/Latinx, Filipinx, Native Americans, and Pacific Islander Americans. Students wishing to pursue the Associate in Arts for Transfer in Social Justice: Ethnic Studies must complete 60 semester units eligible for transfer to the California State University, including either: The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education-Breadth Requirements, and a minimum of 18 units of major coursework in Social Justice Studies: Ethnic Studies, as detailed below. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, including grades of C or higher in each course taken to fulfill the major. California Community College students who are awarded the Associate in Arts for Transfer in Social Justice: Ethnic Studies are guaranteed admission with junior standing somewhere in the CSU system in a major deemed similar to their Associate in Art for Transfer degree, as well as a .01 grade point average bump increase to a similar major at a CSU campus (for admissions purposes only). Students are strongly encouraged to meet with a counselor to review their options for transfer and to develop an educational plan that best meets their goals. Program Learning Outcomes 1.
