282 Chabot College 2024-2026 CREDIT COURSE LISTING, LNSK, LIBS 117 Learning Skills - Reading 3 Units Designed for students with learning disabilities and students looking to improve reading comprehension of college-level text. Students learn and implement reading comprehension techniques to use with various forms of text for example: traditional textbooks, articles, and novels. Learn and develop strategies for identifying the main idea and important details from the text. Demonstrate comprehension through formal academic summaries and develop critical thinking through written response papers. Students will also build academic vocabulary through weekly practice, quizzes, and using new vocabulary in their writing. Lastly, students will understand how reading connects their experience to the world through the use of biographies and novels discussed as a class. Lecture: 54 hours 118A Learning Skills: Reading/Writing 3 Units Learn and apply strategies to develop college writing skills with an emphasis on developing reading comprehension, summarization, and writing formal responses to the readings. Students learn techniques for reading college-level text, identifying the main idea and important details, and retaining information. Students practice annotation, outlining, and 5-paragraph essay structure. Academic writing structure is illustrated through real world examples using debate and presentation techniques. Designed for students with learning disabilities and other students who are looking to improve their reading and writing skills. Lecture: 54 hours 118B Learning Skills: Reading/Writing 3 Units Designed for students with learning disabilities, and other students, to improve reading and writing skills in preparation for college- level English. Practice and develop elements of the writing process including pre-writing, use of graphic organizers, editing and revising, and review of basic grammar. The course also includes reading comprehension strategies and a review of compensatory strategies. Debate format and oral presentation are used to demonstrate rhetorical voice and methods of clear communication. Lecture: 54 hours 119 Mathematics 3 Units Preparation for problem solving success in college for those with learning disabilities. Emphasis on quantitative reasoning abilities needed to process and integrate word problems and related problem solving tasks. Designed for students with identified learning disabilities. Students use reading comprehension and academic writing techniques on assignments from their college courses. One-on-one academic tutoring and support with assignments, essays, and projects. Laboratory: 54 hours 121 Learning Skills – Quantitative Strategies through Language Skills 1 Unit Guided practice in specific compensatory and study strategies for students with learning disabilities in language based quantitative reasoning skills (dyscalculia). Focus on utilizing skills and strategies in conjunction with academic course materials. Development of math and language skills. Designed for Learning Skills students enrolled in math. Laboratory: 54 hours LIBRARY SKILLS LIBRARY SKILLS (LIBS) COURSES 1 Library Skills for an Information Society 1 Unit Introduction to academic libraries and information resources they provide, including development of search strategies, and the retrieval, evaluation, and use of information. Effective use of print and electronic resources, including online library catalogs, reference sources, online periodicals and research databases, and the internet. Prepares students to resolve different information queries, problems or issues (both academic and non-academic) in a systematic way— locate, evaluate, synthesize and communicate information. Lecture: 18 hours 2 Library Reseand Information Literacy Skills via Popular Culture 2 Units Introduction to research techniques using Chabot College library resources. Teaches the skills needed to successfully find, evaluate, and document information in print, electronic, and Internet formats. Covers plagiarism, the ethical and legal aspects of information use, and the critical thinking skills necessary for successful college research. Lecture: 36 hours
